Went to see 300 today with just about everyone in my department from work. Not what I would have picked, but it's a free movie, we got an afternoon off work, and it's a group thing.
It's a pretty good story, the cinematography was good (muted and selective color palettes set the tone), and I like how there's a classic Greek "tragic flaw" or error in judgment that leads to the plot point that turns the tide of the battle against the Spartans. No idea if that's in the historic record, but I thought it was in the style of classical literature.
Obviously there's a lot of killing. The CG blood effects are interesting -- 3D globs of blood squirt around every wound (with appropriate squishy sounds). The style reminded me of a video game with its stylish insistence on the 3D effect. One of my friends said it looked like the effects in Gears of War
Spoiler Alert - The queen runs into some trouble with a slimy politico (they're everywhere, aren't they) and takes care of her issues by stabbing him. Not to say he didn't deserve it... but man, life sure would move a lot faster if we all could fix our problems by taking out the people that were in our way. Unless we made a mistake. Oops, my bad. I was wrong. Sorry about that little hole in your body I made with this blade. :-)
